Letters from the Lunar Outpost

Envy, among other ingredients, has a mixture of the love of justice in it. We are more angry at undeserved than at deserved good fortune.

Dan Savage Bullies Christian Kids

A friend of mine turned me on to Don Savage’s “It Gets Better” video and it’s a video with a great message. For a kid getting picked on more than the norm, a kid getting brutally picked on, the best thing I could think of to tell them is to just hold on, it gets better, all you have to do is make it through and you’ll be amazed what an entirely different world awaits you once you’re done with high school. So it’s a great message and no doubt its had a positive impact.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let me tell you why Dan Savage is an asshole.

As a guy who got bullied, as a guy who made a movie about bullying, you are the last person in the world who should be getting up in front of a large room of teenage kids and doing the bullying yourself! Are you kidding me?

Dan Savage, speaking to a large room of high school students attending a journalism conference sponsored by the National Scholastic Press Association and the Journalism Education Assocation:

We can learn to ignore the bullshit in the Bible about gay people — the same way we have learned to ignore the bullshit in the Bible about shellfish, about slavery, about dinner, about farming, about menstration, about virginity, about masturbation . . .

source: Fox News

Wow. Way to cherry pick the most obscure parts of the Old Testament and completely mock the holy book and faith of probably half the kids in the room as well as the 60% to 76% of Americans who identify themselves as Christian.

Is there like a negative image / reverse reality version of the Westboro Baptist Church somewhere where they teach this kind of garbage? You think Christians are ignoring teachings of the Old Testament? If you had spent half the time researching the New Testament as you have spent cherry picking through the Old Testament, you would know that Jesus’ arrival meant that many of those Old Testament rules had been superseded. You don’t throw out the entire Old Testament just because a few rules have been superseded!

Hey Dan, while we’re on the topic of Christianity, how many Christian countries can you name that are executing people for being homosexual? None? Yeah, that’s what I thought. So where’s your profanity-laden tirade against people of the Muslim faith? Where’s your outrage against the faith of half-a-dozen Islamic countries which make it common practice to KILL PEOPLE for no other reason than their being homosexuals? You’re picking on the wrong religion, asshole!

But wait, it gets better . . .

At one point Savage called Christian teenagers who walked out of the speech “pansy-assed.”

And how’s that for the ultimate irony? Dan Savage, the celebrated advocate for victims of bullying, speaking to a large room of teenage kids, spewing profanities, mocking people’s religion and calling the kids he insulted “pansy-assed” as they walked out the door. There he is folks, up there on the video screens, larger than any bully you ever met in the hallway.

Dan Savage Speaking to Teenage Students

And I just lost every ounce of sympathy I could have ever had for you for being bullied as a kid.

  • Hey Mike, how’s it going brother.

    I pray for Dan Savage that he would repent of his sins and receive Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior so he can be forgiven of all his sins and be given eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

    Matthew (5:11-12)- “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. 12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.

    Matthew (5:43-44)- “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. 44 But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!

    Note: When we are wronged, often our first reaction is to get even. Instead, Jesus said we should do good to those who wrong us! Our desire should not be to keep score but to love and forgive. This is not natural-it is supernatural. Only God can give us the strength to love as he does. Instead of planning vengeance, pray for those who hurt you.

    Philippians (4:13)- For I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength.

    Note: By telling us not to retaliate. Jesus keeps us from taking the law into our own hands. By loving and praying for our enemies, we can overcome evil with good.

    Note: To many Jews of Jesus’ day, these statements were offensive. Any Messiah who would turn the other cheek was not the military leader they wanted to lead a revolt against Rome. Since they were under Roman oppression, they wanted retaliation against their enemies, whom they hated. But Jesus taught us a new, radical response to injustice; Instead of demanding rights, give them up freely! According to Jesus Christ, it is more important to give justice and mercy than to receive it.

    Romans (12:19-21)- 19 Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the LORD. 20 Instead, “If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads.” 21 Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.

    Hebrews (10:28-31)- 28 For anyone who refused to obey the law of Moses was put to death without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Just think how much worse the punishment will be for those who have trampled on the Son of God, and have treated the blood of the covenant, which made us holy, as if it were common and unholy, and have insulted and disdained the Holy Spirit who brings God’s mercy to us. 30 For we know the one who said, “I will take revenge. I will pay them back.” He also said, “the Lord will judge his own people.” 31 It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

    Note: When people deliberately reject Christ’s offer of salvation,, they reject God’s most precious gift. They ignore the leading of the Holy Spirit, the one who communicates to us God’s saving love. This warning was given to Jewish Christians who were tempted to reject Christ for Judaism, but it applies to anyone who rejects Christ for another religion or, having understood Christ’s atoning work, then deliberately turns away from it. The point is that here is no other acceptable sacrifice for sin than the death of Christ on the cross. If someone deliberately rejects the sacrifice of Christ after clearly understanding the Good News teaching about it, then there is no way for that person to be saved, because God has not provided any other name for people to call on to save them.

    Acts (4:11-12)-11 For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says, ‘The stone that you builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.’ 12 There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.

    John (11:25)- Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying.

    John(5:24)-“I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but have already passed from death into life.

    Hebrews (10:37-38)- 37 “For in just a little while, the Coming One will come and not delay.38 And my righteous ones will live by faith. But I will take no pleasure in anyone who turns away.”

    Note: God’s power is awesome, and his punishment terrible. These words give us a glimpse into the holiness of God. He is sovereign; his power is unlimited; he will do as he promises. God’s judgment is for those who have rejected God’s mercy. For them, falling into God’s hands will be a dreadful experience. They will have no excuses. They will discover that they were wrong, but it will be too late. For those who accept Christ’s love and his salvation, however, the coming judgment is no cause for worry. Being saved through his grace, they have nothing to fear.

    Hebrews (10:39)- But we are not like those who turn away from God to their own destruction. We are the faithful ones, whose souls will be saved.

    Again I pray for Dan Savage as well as for all unbelievers. I pray that God would open their hearts, open their eyes, and unclog their ears, so that they may see and understand the Truth of the Good News about Jesus Christ our Lord and receive his free gift, of saving grace. I ask and pray this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

    God bless,
    Randy

    • Excellent post, well chosen scriptures, great commentary . . .

      ~~~ “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! ~~~
      That is just so hard to imagine actually living up to and putting into practice . . . I just . . . I just can’t . . . ah what the heck . . .
      I love you Dan Savage.
      Hmmm . . . yeah, it actually does feel pretty good. He’s still an asshole, though.
      • How can this low life get up and speak on the bible when it is obvious that he knows nothing about what he speaks…how can some one like this be up parading as a anti bullying guru?
