Letters from the Lunar Outpost

To be fond of learning is near to wisdom; to practice with vigor is near to benevolence; and to be conscious of shame is near to fortitude. He who knows these three things knows how to cultivate his own character.

Not satisfied with the labor participation rate suffering the deepest plunge in American history under their watch, Obama and the Democrats in Congress are now pushing for an extension of unemployment benefits.

Not satisfied with the labor participation rate suffering the deepest plunge in American history under their watch, Obama and the Democrats in Congress are now pushing for an extension of unemployment benefits.

This latest “news story” out of the Associated Press doesn’t even try to mask its agenda in pushing for an extension of unemployment benefits:

A cutoff of benefits for the long-term unemployed has left more than 1.3 million Americans with a stressful decision:
What now?
Without their unemployment checks, many will abandon what had been a futile search and will no longer look for a job — an exodus that could dwarf the 347,000 Americans who stopped seeking work in December. Beneficiaries have been required to look for work to receive unemployment checks.

The article tells us that beneficiaries are “required to look for work to receive unemployment checks” hoping we won’t roll our eyes when we read that it’s “required”. The truth of the matter is, that requirement has all the thoroughness of the government taking people’s word for it when they say they’ve been looking for work.

Next, we’re told that not extending the benefits will actually decrease the amount of people looking for work:

Without their unemployment checks, many will abandon what had been a futile search and will no longer look for a job.

Of course, the article fails to mention that the reality for many is that:

Without their unemployment checks, many will abandon their couches and televisions and begin looking for a job.

In true propagandist fashion, the article then tries to humanize the story by sketching vignettes of the plights of some everyday Americans, “people like Stan Osnowitz, a 67-year-old electrician in Baltimore . . .”

We’re then given one economist’s opinion that extending unemployment benefits is good for the economy:

Jesse Rothstein, an economist at the University of California, Berkeley, who has studied the long-term unemployed, has found that extended benefits help both the recipients and the economy – by fueling consumer spending.

(Gee, if it’s so good for the economy, why don’t we just extend unemployment benefits forever?)

Predictably, no mention is made of the many studies which have shown that extending unemployment benefits provides a disincentive for people to return to work.

For all the efforts of the nameless hacks at AP in trying to drum up support for extending unemployment benefits, there’s one glaring question the article fails to answer:

How could we possibly need to extend the longest extension of unemployment benefits in our nation’s history when the Obama-loving media keeps telling us we’re in the middle of a recovery?

Twinkies, 1930-2012

The story of the death of Twinkies may represent for many, yet another sign that America’s best days are behind her, but for all the people mourning the loss of a true American icon, there’s more to this story than first meets the eye.

Hostess Brands — the maker of such iconic baked goods as Twinkies, Devil Dogs and Wonder Bread — announced Friday that it is asking a federal bankruptcy court for permission to close its operations, blaming a strike by bakers protesting a new contract imposed on them. The closing will result in Hostess’ nearly 18,500 workers losing their jobs as the company shuts 33 bakeries and 565 distribution centers nationwide. The bakers’ union represents around 5,000.

source: WGHP News

Ah, the power of the mighty unions, where 5,000 union workers banded together can destroy the jobs of 18,500 workers.

But here’s the money quote:

“We’re going to bring in more money on unemployment than what they’re going to pay us now.” – Carol Mitchell, former Hostess employee

source: KSHB Action News

So hey America, quit your crying about the death of the Twinkie and be happy for all the 18,500 formerly employed who can now look forward to getting paid more for sitting at home watching TV, er – I mean, looking for work than the $16-$18 per hour they were paid as unskilled laborers.

And when you reach the end of those 99 weeks (or however long it may be extended) and the unemployment checks are about to stop coming, you can then begin looking for a job in earnest knowing that you’ll never have to face the prospect of a 40-hour work week, because post-Obamacare, all the jobs will be part-time jobs.

God bless the new America.

America Held Hostage - The Iranian Hostage Crisis

33 years ago today, the radical jihadists of Iran took 52 American embassy workers and held them hostage for 444 days. The Iranian hostage crisis became all-consuming for President Carter as he worked through the final days of his presidency to secure their release, but perhaps it was the American election of that “crazy, trigger-happy cowboy” Ronald Reagan two months earlier that did the most to secure our people’s release. It was only after Reagan was inaugurated that – in a final insult to Carter – the Iranians gave our hostages up for release.

It’s now been 1,383 days since Obamanomics took hostage of our economy here at home. After spending our $10 trillion national debt all the way to an astronomical $16 trillion and seeing unemployment rise despite the orgy of spending, after promising to be a uniter and turning out to be The Great Divider, after watching Iran progress four years closer to having nuclear weapons and radical Islam on the rise in the Middle East with the assassination of our first American ambassador since Jimmy Carter was president, this presidency has been an unmitigated disaster.

For the president who promised us, "If I don’t have this done in three years, then there’s going to be a one-term proposition," it's time to make those prophetic words come true.

Joe Soptic, as Full of It as a Septic Tank

I was thinking of that disgusting ad where Joe Soptic accused Mitt Romney of the death of his wife (an ad that ranged from disingenuous insinuations to flat-out lies in five different ways.)

<--- Click the thumbnail to get a good look at this man.

It got me to thinking, and I wondered what a Romney ad might look like if his surrogate super PACs were just reckless and dishonest as Team Obama’s.

When Barack Obama was elected, he warned America that if we didn’t rush through his $787 billion stimulus, unemployment could go as high as 6%. The Democrat-controlled Congress passed his stimulus, only to see unemployment rise as high as 10%. The HOPE and CHANGE we were promised became a reality of gloom and doom with 43-straight months of unemployment over 8%.

All of that is fact, of course, but here’s where the Obama-style sleaze comes in . . .

Perhpas it’s no surprise then, that as hopeless as the prospect of having to re-enter the job market is these days, we hear more and more stories of employees losing their jobs and snapping, like the employee who shot the employer who fired him and died in a hail of bullets right out on the city streets as happened in front of the Empire State Building yesterday. The hope is gone, the job market is abysmal, and yesterday we saw two more stark examples of victims of the Obama economy.

This ad paid for by Co-opting Obama’s Sleaze for the GOP.

As outraqeous as this bit of satire may be, it should be pointed out that it’s no worse than things that have actually been said by that lunatic vice president of ours who has numerous times suggested Republicans, by not supportings administration policies, were supporters of rape and murder.

Going by Joe’s standard’s, maybe my hyberbole wasn’t so over the top after all.

There are fewer undocumented immigrants in California because many are now finding the American dream south of the border.

“It’s now easier to buy homes on credit, find a job and access higher education in Mexico,” Sacramento’s Mexican consul general, Carlos González Gutiérrez, said Wednesday. “We have become a middle-class country.”

Mexico’s unemployment rate is now 4.9 percent, compared with 9.4 percent joblessness in the United States.

Illegal Immigration of Tomorrow

Three years since its passage, just how bad has the $787 billion stimulus failed in providing jobs to America? Try getting a handle on this: Not only has unemployment risen over 20%, but America’s 9.4% unemployment rate is now almost double the unemployment rate down in Mexico.

As the illegals here in America are now heading back down south to the better job market in Mexico, maybe we should rethink that whole border fence thing and keep that border open – with job prospects the way they are in America, it might not be too long before it’s the Americans who are the ones trying to sneak across the border.

The only thing that might prevent this reverse wave of illegal immigration might be the Mexican Government’s zero tolerance treatment of illegals in their country.

Reality down in Mexico is that from the same country that screamed bloody murder over Arizona’s SB 1070, you have hundreds of checkpoints and people who do not carry papers and ID are subject to arrest. From the same Mexican government that rails against America for profiling their people, you have laws that will bar foreigners if they upset “the equilibrium of the national demographics” (racial profiling written right into the legal code!) and from the same government that condemns us for our half-hearted attempts to enforce our own immigration laws, you have Mexican laws which make illegal entry a felony punishable by two years imprisonment, with re-entry punishable by ten years imprisonment!

¡Hipócritas de mierda!

On second thought, as hard as the Mexicans crack down on illegal immigration in their own country, you probably never will see that reverse wave of illegal immigration no matter how bad this economy is failing.
