Letters from the Lunar Outpost

Human improvement is from within outward.
- Froude, English Historian (1818-1894)

A funny thing happened to me this morning. I woke up and knowing full-well that my Raiders were playing the early game today, it struck me that I had no absolutely no desire to tune into the game or have anything else to do with the NFL. This after four decades of die-hard fandom, following my Raiders almost every single game for what would have been exactly forty years this year. I had no desire to watch any of it – none, zip, zilch, nada.

It was bad enough for sports in general to see ESPN become the equivalent of MSNBC’s sports division, but at least with the propaganda ESPN spews, you couldn’t blame the leagues themselves.  Now we have to witness the same National Football League which cracks down on players for excessive celebrations turning a blind eye to players disrespecting the flag and the national anthem. To hell with those players and to hell with the league which allows it.

Athletes making millions of dollars a year crying about oppression should cry about it to their black president. If they really cared about their people, they would focus on the actual problems inside the community, such as the rate of nearly 6,000 black on black murders last year instead of putting all their energies into playing the victim card over a handful of police shootings.

After 40 years, I am done with the NFL. I have absolutely no desire to watch it any more and it looks like I’m not alone on this, either.

  • Well said. With that,? I’m still
Drinking the kool-Aid that is the NFL.

  • Wow, Mike, you’ve had the spiritual awakening! Did you really think that the sport that invented “head injury” was going to last forever? And that week-ends of boozing and TV sports is the quintessential human experience? You’re a free man, Mike! Imagine, you could take up a writing career, or do something in broadcasting! The sky’s the limit, man, go for it, leave the spectator sports behind!

    • Jerry Jones keep it up and see what your franchise is worth two years from now. Kneeling during the national anthem is nothing but disrespect.

  • I’m with you Mike. I lost all interest in it. Some, of my friends still watch and I get the invites but I pass. I’m tired of the politics and watching them further divide our country. Besides, it’s amazing, it’s seems like my weekends are longer now and more time with family. Yeah, I’m not tuning back in.

  • The NFL has lost customers like me and I hope they loose more. They allow the players to get away with crimes with no or little punishment. They have for years hidden the effects of trauma on its players. They themselves and players now try to use the organization to place their political views. Many years ago baseball went through a strike by players. I’ve never watched a game since and never will. If the NFL does not make some major changes soon they will loose me too.

  • Mike, I am all with you. I was a diehard Packer fan, but Rodgers helped to end that. I am off of the NFL for good. Overpaid disrespecting A__holes. I hope the whole thing goes down the toilet where it belongs. Talking to others they have the same feelings. God Bless You And God Bless America!

  • I have never been a big football fan and will not miss them from my life. That element has destroyed something that a lot of good people have enjoyed for years. The NBA is probably next. It offered a chance for a life free of economic concerns for a lot of people. They blew it folks. The owners were as guilty as they were.
    Money did the deal.

College is destined to big problems too. Alabama’s coach for example makes 6 mill and the players do the work for little. Multi million stadiums, 6 mill salaries, look the other way from all sorts of behavior. For the love of the game? Be serious.
