The purest treasure mortal time afford Is spotless reputation; that away, Men are but gilded loam or painted clay.
- Shakespeare, English Dramatist and Poet (1564-1616)
The president’s approval ratings are split at 46 percent in a new Quinnipiac University poll as voters express substantial disdain for how the Obama administration is handling policy issues including federal spending and taxes.
But even as Obama struggles to gain support for his approaches to the issues, 74 percent of voters said they personally like the president. Forty-one percent of those surveyed said they like him personally and like his policies, while 33 percent said they like him personally but don’t like his policies. Just 1 percent said they like Obama’s policies but not him, and 19 percent said they don’t like him or his policies.
You never see that! Normally, a politician’s personal ratings are pretty close in line with their job approval, even more so for a president – for the most part, if you like the president’s policies, you like the president, if you don’t like the president’s policies, you don’t like the president. Never in our lifetimes have we seen one in three Americans say they still like the president personally even though they don’t like his policies. One in three!
So while the moonbeams keep screaming, “RACIST!” at anyone who dare question the president, reality is, no president in our lifetimes has ever had so much goodwill from the American people. For his whole presidency, Obama has enjoyed personal ratings right up there with George W. Bush’s numbers after 9/11. The fact is, the vast majority of Americans do not want to dislike the first African-American president.
It was the moderates and Independents who were excited to make that historic vote and it’s those moderates and Independents who made the difference in putting Obama in the White House, but if they knew at the time that Obama the candidate would bear no resemblance to Obama the president, a president who has shown he believes the solution to every problem lies in more and more government, I seriously doubt he would have won that election. Obama’s a likeable guy, he’s just not the moderate he sold himself as.
